MONSOON TUESDAY...SURPRISE THURSDAY?

SOOO CLOSE...

While everybody focuses on the monster storm effecting the country on Tuesday and the heavy rain in the Ohio Valley, our focus shifts towards Thursday and Friday. We are monitoring the possibility for an accumulating snow very close to the tristate Thursday night.

This smaller, yet potent storm will form on the heels of our Tuesday soaker. The storm is expected to form Wednesday night in the Gulf of Mexico. As of Tuesday morning it was expected to run up the east coast and miss Cincy completely. We needed about a 300 mile shift Westward to be in the "Action". Tuesday, the models shifted the storm about 150 in our direction, just skirting the area. We have another day and a half to watch it. If we get anymore of a shift west, we'll be talking about snow here Thursday night and Friday.

As of Wednesday morning the models bring the edge of the snow to Brown and Adams county. Effecting the Tristate, but only our eastern most counties. We have a little more time to watch it...This one is going to be CLOSE!!!!

"I SPY"....A MIDWEST MONSTER

ICY MONDAY...TO START
UPDATE: 8:00am
25 Degrees with Freezing Rain, Sleet, and a little snow are moving through the area. The side roads are icy but the main interstate lanes are fine. We expect it to move through by 11am then temperatures should rise above freezing. The week ahead looks quite bumpy...we'll be updating the site with our latetst thoughts later today.

Whether you like the snow, or go into a fetal position when you see the white stuff, you have agree that this time of years brings excitement. We see the potential for some "Excitement" over the next week.


FIRST...SATURDAY'S CLIPPER
The "Alberta Clipper" (weak storm from Canada) is still on track for Saturday. Expect snow showers and light snow around during the day on Saturday. Given how cold it's been, we may see an inch or so under the heavier bands.


EXCITEMENT NEXT WEEK
The Real Excitement will come next week. We see 3 storms that will be close enough to bring us an exciting week. One will be a Monday/Tuesday event and the other 2 come in late in the week. All 3 will be working with some cold air and a lot of moisture. ICE, SNOW, and RAIN are all a concern.

"WARM" WEDNESDAY

NEXT ACTION
The sun should come back out late afternoon on Tuesday and we should warm nicely on Wednesday to near 50. Now, this time of year, when we warm up it's usually because another storm is on that way....and that's exactly what we'll have.

Our next system will roll through the area Wednesday night. As you may be hearing on the radio and TV, this one is expected to be mainly rain. We are expecting it to rain overnight Wednesday and finish off as snow showers early Thursday morning. Any accumulation should be well north or our area.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY:

A Major Milestone has been reached on the Internet. Weather Logic is 1 year old 11/28/2008. With over 16,000 hits, we've had a heck of an opening year. Hopefully all of you have been able to stay ahead of the weather and it was a little easier to prepare for what's coming. As long as you keep coming back, we'll keep reporting out!

What A Winter...To Come!

'08-'09 WINTER...HISTORIC or HYPE?
So...what makes a Historic winter? 1 Blizzard (March 2008), multiple little storms where the ground vanishes in December not to be seen until April (2000), or a record cold football game(Freezer Bowl 1982..-3 Degrees). All Cincinnati memorable moments...But what will this winter bring?

Over the last few weeks there have been questions in the halls, and comments on the board about how we see this winter shaping up. Seems we are back in the season where Weather Logic thrives as Cincinnatians begin to fear the solid that falls from the sky, and the cold that keeps us inside. So, we've put together our thoughts at what the next 4 months will bring, and we hope you enjoy it.

I've heard everything from "we are headed to a Florida-like Winter, to an Alaska-type winter". And to be honest, no one really knows what the next 4 days will bring, let alone the next 4 months. Everyone has a thought based on weather patterns, and there's no question....ours is about to change!


"OHIO HIGH"
For me, there are 2 things that make the winter memorable...BIG STORMS, and COLD AIR. For the last few months, Ohio's been cut off from the main storm pattern. We had a flooding spring, with storm after storm pushing the Ohio River out of it's banks. Then, just like that, a "roadblock" was put up...we'll call it the "OHIO HIGH"...and storms went around the state leaving us in a rainfall deficit. But now...there are indications of the roadblock is being lifted, the High is breaking down and letting the storms come back in. Look for the action to start to pick mid to late November. Now we just need the cold...


THE COLD
Winter officially starts on December 22nd and goes to March 19th. But don't let the dates fool you....we average a little over 2" of snow in the month of November. Now as I write this on the first week in November, we are having highs in the Mid 70's...but that's all about to change. Cold is on the way and here's the reason why...



The map above shows the Ice and snow build-up over Canada...so why do we care??? Cincinnati gets the Record cold from "Artic Blasts". These happen when storm systems send our winds in from the North where they originate in Alaska and Canada. The air typically modifies if the ground is exposed, however as this region becomes snow and ice covered, the air can't warm and we wind up with brutally cold temperatures. THE STORMS
Now, we expect the cold air to get here. Cincinnati gets the big snow storms from the south, and smaller "clippers" from the North. Our blizzard last year came out of Texas. The pattern change looks to put Cincinnati in more of a southern storm in the coming weeks. Once the cold air is in place, look to the south to determine your "shovel days". The chart below is from Henry at Accuweather. He expects Cincinnati to get between 20" and 30" of snow this year.













FOLLOW THE FARMERS
When you livelihood depends on it...you take the time to do it right. According to the Muskegon Chronicle, "The Farmers' Almanac is predicting a cold, snowy winter in the Great Lakes region. In fact, the Almanac -- which claims to correctly predict long-term weather patterns 85 percent of the time -- is forecasting a repeat of last year's frigid, snowy winter." Check it out below...

"LET'S GET IT STARTED"
Some aren't waiting to the official start of winter...Here's what's happened already:

• North Carolina - had their earliest "Snow Day" ever on 10/29/08
• Ireland - hit with its lowest October temperature in 70 years
• Central Florida - 2nd coldest temperature ever recorded in October 10/29/08
• Boise Idaho - Earliest Snowfall on record 10/16/08
• Alaska - 3rd coldest summer on record
• UK - Earliest snow flurries on record 10/28/08

THE SUN IS FADING...KINDA

Finally, if all that above isn't enough, the sun has calmed. We've had a record LOW number of sunspots (Storms on the sun where solar energy shoots off) this year. 200 days this year did not have any sunspot activity. 2008 will go down as the blankest year of the space age as we hit the lowest number of sunspots in over 50 years.

Election Week

Perfect Week...Until the End

We are half way through the week, and still enjoying 70's. I would get out and enjoy this as I don't see where we will be back into the 70's for quite some time. We expect a cold front to move through Friday and into the weekend. The front looks pretty strong at this point and we'll be lucky to make it to 50 this weekend. This also looks to be the start of a much stormier patter for us and this is just the first of many cold fronts that are on their way and will take us into winter.
